6 THINGS WITH RACHAEL FUSS
6 Things with Rachael Fuss Founder of Skincare Standard
Based in San Francisco, Rachael is a full-time content creator and founder of Skincare Standard. What started as an account to share beauty has turned into a full fledged career. During Rachel's last semester of college where she double majored in Biology and Psychology she started to share her skincare routine and her account grew exponentially. Today, Rachael is represented by A3 Artists Agency and works with global beauty brands and likeminded creators.Â
I invited Rachael to the Woodhouse for tea to chat about all things beauty and how she got started. I wanted to know what she's coveting since she's clearly set the bar for skincare standards. I asked her to narrow down her personal edit of 6 favorite skincare items on our platform. You can bet it was a tough decision for a beauty expert to choose 6 items she can't live without but it's all here and under $100.Â
1. What started it all for you?
I was connecting with so many likeminded, beauty-obsessed friends and creators and brands I only ever dreamed of working with, and then I fell into creating beauty content full-time at the start of the pandemic. My boyfriend gifted me a camera to help kickstart my full-time career – I had never picked up a DSLR camera in my life before then. Two years later, I'm still working on my photography and videography skills as I create content with my favorite beauty products – right now, I'm really into testing sunscreens and throwing on a good orangey-red lip. I'm so incredibly grateful for the community I've built and brands I have fostered meaningful relationships with, both of which allow me to chat about beauty for a living.
2. What drives your creative spark?
3. Most treasured home decor item?
Definitely my sofa. I had a cloud couch dupe that didn't end up working out in my space, and when I was on the hunt for a new sofa, I had no idea what I was looking for or what I even wanted. I was scrolling through @sameoldla's feed and when I saw this vintage curved sofa in the style of Vladimir Kagan, I knew I had to have it. My boyfriend wanted to test sitting on it first, so I roped him into driving down to LA with me that weekend to check it out. It ended up being more comfortable than I imagined, so we (aka my boyfriend) hauled it back up to San Francisco the next day (bless him). When we brought it home, I immediately knew I wanted to reupholster it in a camel suede, so I spent a few months debating between fabric samples before taking it to a local upholstery shop in the East Bay. It was a whole process, but it's such a stunning and unique piece that I will forever be obsessed with.
4. What’s the best advice you've ever received?
Put yourself out there. I’ve never been one to draw any sort of attention to myself, but I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t make myself uncomfortable along the way.
5. It's 5 o'clock at home. What would you be pouring?
My apartment gets the best light in the early evening around 5 o'clock, so I'm hard at work during this time. I'll sip on a Lychee Sparkling Water from Sanzo to get me through shooting, but I'll unwind with a glass of red wine when my work is done. If I'm not too worn out, I'll whip up a lychee martini. Can you tell I love lychee?
